Q & A with Natalie:

What brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re involved with?  I worked in a health food store in Indianapolis in the mid-90s. One of my co-workers convinced me that I needed to go to a chiropractor for my health, even though I didn't have any problems or pains. On my first visit, the chiropractor explained that the Central Nervous System (CNS) coordinates all the functions of the body and that misalignments of the spine can negatively affect communication between the CNS and the body. Adjustments help to keep that communication pathway open for a higher level of function and optimum health. That made so much sense to me, I wondered why no one had told me that before! By the second or third visit, I had a clear sense, really a calling, that I was supposed to be a chiropractor. Along the path to becoming a chiropractor, I had heard of CranioSacral Therapy and was intrigued by that, as well.

Are you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?  I am married to Timo O'Donnell. We've been together since 2003 and married on 08/08/08. We don't plan to have kids, but we do enjoy our 4 cats and 2 seventy pound mutts! One is a coon hound mix and the other is a Chow mix.

Where are you from? How long in the Greater Chattanooga area? I'm originally from Poughkeepsie, NY and most of my immediate family still lives in that area. I've moved around a lot and have lived in North Carolina, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Indiana and South Carolina. My husband (who is from Pennsylvania) and I moved to Knoxville in 2007 with every intention of spending the rest of our lives here!

What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun? I keep pretty busy, but when I do have some spare time, I like to read, garden, walk our dogs and spend time with friends, especially my husband, Timo O'Donnell. Timo and I both enjoy travel and photography, so we try to plan trips to places where we can take cool photos. I also like to crochet and usually fit that in while I'm a passenger in the car or during meetings. You may have even seen me crochet during CHEO meetings - I promise I'm paying attention, even if my hands are busy!

So tell me about how you got started in your work? My first office was in Spartanburg, SC. I practiced there for 2 years while Timo finished school and we figured out where we wanted to live. We spent one full year talking about what sort of place we wanted to live in and visiting various cities. Eventually, Knoxville rose to the top. We moved here in 2007 and then I spent another 6 months or more figuring out where in Knoxville I should practice. I discovered Gypsy Hands Healing Arts Center through one of their ads in Metropulse. I opened my practice as an independent contractor there in 2008 and I've been loving it ever since! It's a phenomenal community of healers practicing deep tissue bodywork, Reiki and veterinary acupuncture. We even have Reiki training and bellydance classes.

How would you describe your studio to someone?  My adjusting room doesn't look like most chiropractic offices - it's very colorful with huge windows, lots of plants and two adjusting tables. The room where I do CranioSacral Therapy is much more cocoon-like. There are no windows and I keep the lighting low to encourage clients to relax and even go to sleep during the session. I spend a lot of time with my clients and for the most part, even with my chiropractic clients, it's one-on-one time. I do have two adjusting tables, so there is a chance that two people who don't know each other will be getting adjusted at the same time, but mostly it's friends and family members who come in together to get adjusted. From the moment people walk in the door, they can usually tell there's something special about this healing arts center. The energy is so peaceful and calming that we have some clients who come in early or stay after their session to just relax with a cup of tea or maybe read one of the hundreds of books we have.

What services do you offer? I offer chiropractic care and CranioSacral Therapy (CST). I see everyone from newborns to the elderly - we all need a nervous system free of interference, regardless of our state of health! I think chiropractic care and CST blend together really well. They are both focused on removing interference from the body and allowing the body to return to its natural state of health and well-being. CST addresses tissue restriction anywhere in the body, from the dural membrane over the brain and spinal cord to fascia over the muscles, or even tissue in a specific organ. It can even address restriction around the Cranial Nerves. I've worked with newborns suffering from colic and octogenarians with joint problems, but I also see clients who come in because my services help reduce their anxiety or because they have really cool spiritual experiences during their sessions. I've had clients send me poetry that they wrote after a session and others report visions of art that they later create.

What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services that you feel they don’t? Most people think they don't need to go to a chiropractor unless they are in pain, but that's like waiting till you have a cavity to go to the dentist. Chiropractic and CranioSacral Therapy are things that you can do for yourself to maintain good health and prevent health issues from becoming a problem. My clients who come in "just to check it out" are amazed at the sense of well-being they can attain on all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It's really pretty incredible how good we can feel and what we can do when we lower our stress level and allow inspiration to come to us!
