Paula Tate comes from a long line of educators, which may be the reason why she decided to pursue a landscaping degree at UT! Fortunately for our community, after spending several years in Germany and taking a teaching position there, (she went for three months and stayed for two years) she decided “not to fight the genetics,” came home and was convinced that education was, in fact, her calling.
Paula’s mom, LouL, founded Tate’s School of Discovery some 40 years ago, and her dad is a lifetime educator, having been principal at both Cedar Bluff Middle and Ball Camp Elementary schools.
When Paula returned to the states, she began a 15-year teaching career in Knox County. She was nominated as a Walt Disney Teacher of the Year while she was at Gibbs Elementary School. Like her parents, Paula took a great interest in the role that a child’s well-being played in their ability to learn. Her passion led her to research programs that incorporated health and wellness into learning. She discovered, and became certified in, the L.E.A.N Start Program, founded by Dr. William Sears, “America’s Pediatrician.” L.E.A.N is an acronym which stands for lifestyle, exercise, attitude and nutrition.
As well as being certified to train adults she has begun to educate children using “Nutrition Detectives”. It is an interactive, practical and exciting nutritional education program designed specifically for elementary school children. The “Nutrition Detectives” classes, sponsored by Juice Plus, are the brain child of Dr. David Katz. Dr. Katz is best known as the founder of The Yale Prevention Research Center at the Yale School of Medicine, and as the medical columnist for O Magazine.
Beginning in January, classes will be available to the wider community. Paula is teaming up with Paula Pavelka, RN to offer the L.E.A.N. Start Program to other groups. Certified in the program, the “two Paula’s” will be available to meet with parent groups, church groups, physicians or even corporate groups to teach them what a great impact a well-balanced and healthy lifestyle can have on the learning of even the youngest of children.
